First Reviews of Tangled

The first reviews of Tangled are beginning to appear. Early critics are mixed.

Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter writes:
It would have been nice if Disney's self-touted 50th animated feature were one of its best, a film that could stand with the studio's classics, but the world will have to make do with "Tangled," a passably entertaining hodgepodge of old and new animation techniques, mixed sensibilities and hedged commercial calculations.
And Justin Change for Variety (subscription required) agrees, saying:
After last year's "The Princess and the Frog" grossed an underwhelming $104 million domestically, Disney execs opted to change the title of the new film from "Rapunzel" to the more gender-neutral "Tangled." If that suggests a vote of no confidence in traditional princess fare (imagine if "The Little Mermaid" had been called "Beached"), the hipper moniker does underscore the film's odd, somewhat perplexing mix of sensibilities -- pitched somewhere between Disney classicism and the self-conscious storybook quality of DreamWorks' "Shrek" movies or, at best, Stephen Sondheim's "Into the Woods."
Even more biased, self-proclaimed Disney fans, like those writing for The Disney Blog, conclude:
...while Tangled is not perfect, it is definitely entertaining and proof that Disney Animation is slowly returning to the right track creatively.
Color me less than enthused.

If tracking remains soft and Tangled underperforms, matching The Princess and the Frog's grosses or worse yet grossing less than that film's disappointing figures, where does Disney go from there?

ABC Wins Terrible Sounding 'Man Up', Possibly Starring Tim Allen

Deadline.com:
Word is new ABC programming chief Paul Lee was personally involved in the network's efforts to get the comedy that would bring Allen back to ABC where he toplined one of the network's biggest comedies, Home Improvement. Man Up, from 20th TV and studio-based 21 Laps/Adelstein, is a multi-camera family comedy about a guy fighting for his manhood in a world of women.
A sitcom based on misogyny. No doubt it'll be a big hit.

WSJ: Disney's Iger Uses Downturn as Investment Springboard

The Wall Street Journal interviews Disney CEO Bob Iger about the Company's investments during the recession.

If you follow Disney news it's light on interesting developments, but I did like this:
WSJ: You're spending $1 billion to overhaul Disney California Adventure, Disneyland's less-famous neighbor. Why?
Mr. Iger: [Apple CEO] Steve Jobs is fond of talking about brand deposits and brand withdrawals. Any time you do something mediocre with your brand, that's a withdrawal. California Adventure was a brand withdrawal.
We debated, "Should we make it one park?" Raise the price at Disneyland, and suddenly one ticket buys you the whole thing. I even had Imagineers design that.
[But] we would have had to put in transportation systems. It would have cost us so much money to put the monorail in. And to do other things to create one park. That didn't make sense.
We all concluded that the only way we would improve returns on that park is if we made it better and we made it bigger. And we decided to put what is now [around] $1 billion into that.
WSJ: What are you adding?
Mr. Iger: We opened up the first attraction, [the animation-inspired] "World of Color." "Little Mermaid" [is] next summer, and then the big kahuna of them all, "Cars Land," which is a 12-acre land [based on the Pixar animated film.]
[Cars Land] will open in the middle of 2012. "World of Color" has increased attendance since it opened at California Adventure by 20%.
Emphasis mine.

That's a pretty impressive return.

Disney Signs Agreement for Shanghai Theme Park

Shanghai Government to Sign Agreement with Disney Tomorrow

I guess technically it's Friday right now in Shanghai.

People Daily Online:
The Shanghai municipal government plans to sign an agreement with the Walt Disney Company on Friday to lay out the specific structure of the joint venture for the planned Disneyland Park in Shanghai, in line with market speculations.
The municipal government's spokesperson and Walt Disney could not be immediately reached for comment. The Shanghai Disneyland, which will take up 116 hectares and will be co-invested by Chinese and US companies, was approved by the State Council in November 2009 and is expected to be completed by 2014.

Disney Plans Tron: Uprising Animated Show for Disney XD

A spin-off of Tron: Legacy, launching Summer 2012.

Wired:
Tron: Uprising’s voice cast will include Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood, Emmanuelle Chriqui (who plays Sloan on Entourage), Mandy Moore, Paul Reubens (aka Pee-wee Herman) and Lance Henriksen, the publication reported, with Bruce Boxleitner reprising his role as Tron.
The show will spin out of Tron: Legacy, the highly anticipated sequel to 1982 sci-fi movie Tron. Gary Marsh, president of Disney Channels Worldwide, called the animated series “a culmination of an extraordinary collaboration between Disney Television Animation and our feature film studio.”
Disney sees Tron as their chance at a homegrown franchise for boys to rival the Princesses in popularity. If its as successful as they hope, expect things to move pretty fast in the theme parks.

Disney Introduces Princess Line to Compete With American Girl Dolls

Orlando Sentinel's Daily Disney:
The Walt Disney Co. aims to give Mattel’s American Girl doll franchise a run for its money this holiday season. Disney has introduced Princess & Me dolls into the popular 18-inch doll market, and it’s doing so at a lower price point.
Princess & Me dolls sell for $49.99, compared with American Girl dolls, which start at $95. Girls can choose from Cinderella, Ariel, Aurora, Tiana and Belle. After each doll is registered, its owner will receive a letter on her birthday from her favorite princess.
Can they really be considered competitors, though? The Disney Princess dolls don't even seem to be in the same class.

Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival Cancelled for 2011/2012

Announced on the official Disney Parks Blog.

I know guests will be sad to see it gone but Disney will too. It was a great revenue generator. But it's not surprising given the already complicated logistics of rebuilding the Park entrance.

I guess this means Buena Vista Street won't be completed until 2012.

Comparing Theme Park Ride Show Building Sizes

Attractions Magazine:
A friend of mine asserted that the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride in Universal’s Islands of Adventure is in the largest show building in the world. That didn’t seem right, so I pulled out my phone and Google mapped to prove what I thought – that the Revenge of the Mummy building at Universal Studios is bigger. Later at home, I decided to compare some other theme park buildings at the same scale. I hope you find this collage as interesting as I do.

See Tron: Legacy in Your Overpriced Boutique Lightcycle Cufflinks

LATimes.com Hero Blog:
With the opening of “Tron: Legacy” a little more than a month away, the marketing for one of the holiday season’s most anticipated films is in overdrive. As part of the bullish campaign leading to the sci-fi epic’s release, Disney has announced the opening of a “Tron” pop-up shop inside of Culver City’s Royal T Café and gallery.
The shop, which opens Nov. 19 through Dec. 23, is the only one of its kind and will feature a long list of specialty items inspired by the film. But don’t expect flimsy toy Lightcycles or goofy glow-in-the-dark body suits: This pop-up shop is high-end. Just like the aspirations of the new film.
Boo.

Mary Poppins to End Broadway Run? Alice in Wonderland Waiting in the Wings?

Laughingplace.com:
We have heard that Mary Poppins will close at the New Amsterdam Theater in 2011 due to continuing soft sales. Disney Theatrical Productions are currently assessing replacement shows and the division's president Tom Schumacher is keen to bring Alice in Wonderland to the stage. Tim Burton has already agreed to participate in the production. No word as of yet on composers but many of the original creative team behind the Beauty and the Beast musical have been approached. It was originally envisaged that Newsies would be destined for the Great White Way but that project no longer has momentum for a residency run.
Consider it a rumor, but Laughingplace is well connected and usually gets their information straight before running with it.

Remember when I said that Mary Poppins was a qualified success? Even I didn't realize how lousy sales had become.

How does Tom Schumacher still have a job?

UPDATE: Disney contacted Laughingplace to emphatically state that Mary Poppins will not be closing in 2011. Still, it would not surprise me if it happens sooner rather than later. But they need a project ready to use the vacant theater and they're not there yet.

What are Ron & John Working on?

Progress City, U.S.A.:
Animation gossips have claimed for a while now that directors Ron Clements and John Musker were at work preparing a new traditionally animated project to pitch. I’m started hearing rumors that are truly unexpected – that the project they’re boarding is an adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s 1987 novel Mort. The book is the fourth in Pratchett’s beloved Discworld series of comedic fantasies, and follows a young man looking for a job who gets an apprenticeship working for Death.
My first thought: Treasure Planet. Now let us never speak of it again.

The Harry Potter Effect

The Orlando Sentinel:
Traffic on Disney's buses fell 3.8 percent during the first nine months of the year. From January to September, Disney transported about 1.6 million arriving passengers at OIA to its hotels — about 64,000 fewer guests than it carried during the same period last year.
Disney's Magical Express carries fewer guests as more travelers funnel through Orlando International Airport.

They're not coming for Disney.

First Song From Daft Punk's Tron: Legacy Score Debuts With Footage From the Film

Today Walt Disney Pictures released a video for "Derezzed," a song from Daft Punk's original score for Tron: Legacy.

Walt Disney Studios has a quality line-up this holiday season. They're obviously excited about what they have in Tron and advanced word has been promising.

Tangled, however, has not been tracking as promisingly as they hoped. I'm probably one of the few commentators who think changing the name from Rapunzel was a good move. Disney Animation doesn't have the same cultural cache it had in the 90's and the films just aren't event moviegoing anymore.

We'll see in a few weeks what happens, and I don't think it'll be a disaster, but The Princess and the Frog-type numbers seem reasonable.

ABC Gives Two New Series Full Season Pick-Up, Orders More Scripts For Two More Series

Deadline.com:
ABC today became the latest broadcast network to make its full-season pickups, handing out back-nine orders to freshman comedy Better With You and drama No Ordinary Family. Additionally, the network has picked up 5 additional episodes from freshman cop drama Detroit 1-8-7 and 4 from veteran family drama Brothers & Sisters.
ABC has had a weak Fall, with No Ordinary Family the only new series showing any kind of promise. But their midseason entries look just as weak, so ABC had to order something.

Al Lutz: Horsing Around

A new update from the grandfather of internet Disneyland rumormongering.

Neither the Tomorrowland nor the Frontierland expansions are anywhere near moving forward. Mr. Lutz focuses on some of the developments being explored for Frontierland but it wouldn't surprise me if there's some action in Tomorrowland first.

There is a Tron attraction being developed for Disneyland that some folks are quite bullish on. If the film is a big hit this December, the project is guaranteed to gather more steam.

The problem with all of this is that TDA isn't looking to move forward on any major projects in Disneyland Park until after Cars Land is completed in 2012. A lot can change in eighteen months. There are no solid plans right now and many options are being developed and explored.

Cartoon Brew: Brenda Chapman No Longer Directing Pixar's Brave?

Brave has had a somewhat troubled development, so this isn't that surprising.

Cartoon Brew:
Crazy rumors floating into our offices this afternoon from reliable sources. We hear that Brenda Chapman, the first woman director at Pixar, has left the studio and is no longer directing Brave (previously titled The Bear and the Bow). We hear that she was pushed aside from full directing duties a while back, and that story artist Mark Andrews (who also co-directed the Pixar short One Man Band) has taken over directorial duties. We understand that the change officially happened last week, although it had been inevitable for some time.
As mentioned in the article, directors being replaced on animated films is a fairly common occurrence. But this is particularly noteworthy because Brave was to be the first Pixar film directed by a woman.

Disney Buys-Out Paramount's Marvel Contract, Will Release Avengers & Iron Man 3

Disney will pay $115 million to Paramount but avoids having to work with a rival studio to launch major tentpoles. Paramount is still promoting and releasing Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger next summer.

Deadline.com
Paramount had been earning an 8% distribution fee on the Marvel titles like Iron Man. Paramount also put up P&A and got reimbursed over time. The $115 million will be paid in two installments--half when Iron Man 3 is released and the other half when The Avengers is released. One will be released May, 2012 and the other a year later. If those movies perform more strongly than expected, Paramount will earn more than $115 million. I'm told that the studio is actually getting 9% on that third Iron Man movie, a reward for launching one of Hollywood's most valuable franchises.

Lost Disney Laugh-O-Grams at Museum of Modern Art

Cartoon Brew:
Cole Johnson located Goldie Locks and The Three Bears at MoMA under a 1929 sound reissue title “The Peroxide Kid” and Gerstein recently identified the lost Jack The Giant Killer, which the Museum had under the name “The K-O Kid”.
In addition to the two new discoveries, newly preserved and restored prints of Little Red Riding Hood, Puss In Boots and The Four Musicians Of Bremen will be screened at MoMA along with Disney’s original 1921 Laugh-O-Gram sample reel and several Ub Iwerks cartoons – Flip the Frog in Techno-Cracked (1933) and the ComicColor Don Quixote (1934).
For Disney enthusiasts, this is a huge find.
This means that all seven 1922 Disney Laugh-O-Grams fairy tales – Holy Grails to Disney historians – are now known to exist.

The Telegraph Interviews Euro Disney Chief Philippe Gas

Some highlights:
“We still have 26 years of payments, but I don’t think it matters to have everything paid off. I think you want to be able to look at the sustained profitability – for me, this is the goal.”
Euro Disney plans to be debt free in 2036 but they will pay down 25% of the current debt by 2013.
High on Mr Gas’s agenda are the development of the Disney Studios, where he plans more attractions and restaurants with the intention of turning it into a “one-day experience”. New Disney characters he is keen to feature at the park include Disney’s Cars and Ratatouille.
Ratatouille is perfect, as it is set in Paris,” he said, pointing to a large wall poster of the film in his office.

On the Set of Star Tours 2 With C-3PO

New post from Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald on the official Disney Parks Blog.

Al Lutz on Cars Land Master Planning

Over at MiceAge, Al Lutz gives a detailed rundown of the shops and restaurants coming to Cars Land. A few of the finer points are still in flux, but for the most part you can count on what he details.

But what I found the most informative was what he has to say about master planning the mix of offerings in the new land:
The huge mistake that DCA's original planners and executives made (most of whom have since left Disney and are not on the invite list for any of the DCA grand opening ceremonies in 2011 and 2012) back when the park was in final design and construction in 1998-2001 are still fresh in people's minds. After TDA took a second look at the plans, WDI purposely scaled back the dining and merchandise from Phase One of Cars Land. Sarge's Surplus Hut, for instance, will sit empty on opening day, and the walkways leading in and out of Cars Land are designed to lead to future park expansion pads.
There's a lot more and it's well worth reading.

Disney Announces Tron Night, Revs Up Marketing Machine

NYTimes.com:
Borrowing a marketing ploy from 20th Century Fox and “Avatar,” the Walt Disney Company said it would preview more than 20 minutes of its forthcoming “Tron: Legacy”free at Imax theaters around the world. Fox and Imax created this model by showing about 15 minutes of “Avatar” a few months before that movie’s release.
The screenings will take place Thursday, 28 October. Tickets will be available on a first-come basis starting tomorrow. You can find more information at facebook.com/tron.

Secretariat Opens #3 For the Weekend

Why can't Disney get a film to open?

Deadline.com:
All weekend, rival studio execs snarked to me about how the Secretariat marketing campaign was "horrid," in the words of one. "The only audience interested was old females, but the print and the spots made it look like an action movie. Where was The Blind Side's spunky female empowerment, the comedy, the romance?" Criticized another, "I think when you take the beautiful Diane Lane and turn her into a frumpy aged-up woman, you're flirting with danger. Then there's the whole horse thing, which is probably second only to boxing in moviegoing 'who cares?'.
Another miss for the Studios' embattled marketing department.

Disney's California Adventure - Pun Central

Outsourcing various creative elements in theme park design is not a new development, but the extent to which it was utilized in creating Disney's California Adventure was unprecedented in Disney history.

Yesterland.com:
The captions and the names of most of the games were outsourced by Disney to Karma Creative (now World Creative Supply), a company whose business is to “name products, create slogans, write tag lines, and proofread text.” Karma Creative was responsible for many the original attraction, restaurant, and shop names at Disney’s California Adventure—their specialty was puns.
MaliBOOMer, Malibu-Ritos, Baker's Field Bakery, Taste Pilot's Grill and on and on.

Of course, Shanghai Disneyland is being designed almost wholly by outside creative companies. Their work is being overseen by WDI. It's similar to the way Universal Creative operates and, if successful in Shanghai, will be the new operating procedure at Imagineering moving forward.

Disney Research Developing TeslaTouch

CNN:
"It's kind of like a buzzing or a vibration. It has the same effect as a buzz," said Chris Harrison, one of the Disney researchers and a Ph.D. student at Carnegie Mellon University. "But if you carefully tune the frequency and the vibration of the panel you can actually create things that feel like sandpaper or rubber or a wall."
In the case of a touch screen keyboard -- like those on the Apple iPhone, for example -- users would be able to feel the location of the keys, and could learn to "touch type" without looking at their hands, he said.
Sounds interesting, but what's the application for Disney? Another patent that reaps large licensing fees.

Major Restructuring at Disney Theatrical Group

How does Group head Thomas Schumacher still have a job?

Deadline.com:
The Disney Theatrical Group has always and still does report to the Walt Disney Studios chairman who is Rich Ross of course. Yet Schumacher likes to think he's running a boutique business that's not under Ross's direction. (Hmm.) So here is what's really going on: Word is that Schumacher's contract is up for renewal. And [David] Schrader, a former finance manager for American Airlines whose rapid ascension at Disney has caused some raised eyebrows, is positioning himself as the new executive leader with studio brass. Meanwhile, Schumacher recently had his personal deal to produce live-action features for Walt Disney Studios, with a focus on movie musicals, cancelled by Ross.

Pulitzer Prize-winner David Lindsay-Abaire is rewriting the script. He previously worked with Raimi on the now-canned Spider Man 4.

Interactive Graveyard Coming to WDW Haunted Mansion

Inside The Magic:
Though Disney has not officially announced what is coming to the graveyard, reports suggest that the recent interactive play-test that took place in April is a sign of what’s in the works for this location. In addition to rerouting the attraction’s queue to better accommodate handicapped/wheelchair access (guests needing assistance currently enter via the exit), a new graveyard is reportedly being installed that will replace the former (at least in part), adding a level of interactivity to the area.
The entire queue is being reworked and will wind its way closer to the waterfront. The graveyard is going to be a much more central part of it.

The entire attraction is going down for refurbishment in January. I've heard rumors that they are looking to add more of a New Orleans flair to the mansion (and a hatbox ghost?). It doesn't make any sense but they've done weirder things.

"The most exciting, by far the most important part of our Florida project - in fact the heart of everything we'll be doing at Disney World is our experimental prototype community of tomorrow. We call it EPCOT."

Disney Considering Just Making a Film About the Whole Damn Magic Kingdom

Sean O'Neal writing for the AV Club:
But to the studio’s credit, it seems to be taking that possible exploitation of its own properties very seriously, with executives reportedly very mindful of the fact that it could end up damaging the entire Disney brand if the film—which is being described as Disney’s own Justice League or The Avengers—ends up feeling like a feature-length commercial that trades entirely on past successes. (Of course, the fact that even studio executives are thinking in those terms pretty much confirms that it would be, right?)

Construction Crews Begin Dismantling Maliboomer

I have heard that the ride has been sold to another, not Disney amusement park.

Gore Verbinski in Talks to Re-team With Johnny Depp on Lone Ranger

Deadline.com:
Verbinski, whose last live action film was 2007’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, is getting serious about making his next directing outing The Lone Ranger, the Disney pic that has Jerry Bruckheimer producing with Depp playing Tonto.
Huh.

Disney Agrees to Allow Hijab for Intern

The Greater Los Angeles Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) announced today that a Chicago Muslim woman employed as an intern at Disneyland in Anaheim will be allowed to wear an Islamic head scarf, or hijab, at work.
Interesting. But we don't know what the accommodation entails.

Is it similar to the option given to the Grand Californian employee, only the intern accepted?

Bloomberg: Disney, Sony, Warner Planning $30 Home Film-Viewing Option

Sony Pictures, Warner Bros. and Walt Disney Co. are in talks with the largest cable TV systems to offer films for as much as $30 per showing soon after they run in theaters.
The studios are talking with In Demand, a partnership of Cox Communications Inc., Comcast Corp. and Time Warner Cable Inc., Bob Benya, chief executive officer of In Demand, said in an interview. Disney is also discussing streaming films on Web- linked devices such as Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox console and Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 3, people with knowledge of the talks said.
Okay, but how do they convince the already nervous exhibitors that this isn't going to destroy their business?

Disney Interactive Chief Resigns

A tenure marked by a litany of tepid strategies in quick succession.

The Wall Street Journal (Subscription required):
[Disney Interactive Media Group]'s difficulty defining its mission had been a source of frustration for senior Disney executives, including Mr. Iger, who has frequently cited the need for media companies like his to embrace new technologies wholeheartedly. While some of Disney's efforts in new media have been robust, others have been fragmented.
One potential replacement being floated is John Pleasants, current EVP at Disney and prior CEO of recently acquired Playdom. Pleasants previously worked for gaming giant EA.

But...
he’s not the only possibility if Iger wants to promote from within a group that includes entrepreneurs and Disney execs. The EVP level includes Lane Merrifield, Disney Online Studios and Co-Founder and GM of Club Penguin; Disney vets Larry Shapiro, EVP-Business Development and Operations, and Paul Yanover, Disney Online. Bart Decrem and Andrew Lacey, who came along with the summer acquisition of Tapulous, have exec gigs; Decrem is SVP-GM of Disney Mobile, while Lacy is SVP & Head of Studios.
But Iger also has shown a willingness to move execs from group to group—Rich Ross from Disney to head the studio, for instance—and going outside completely isn’t out of the realm if he really wants to shake things up.

Blockbuster Files For Bankruptcy, Disney Among New Creditors

It's been known to be happening for months, but Blockbuster made it official today and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The plan calls for more than $1 billion in debt to be written off and brought down to a much more manageable $100 million.

Blockbuster's new line of creditors include its movie studio suppliers, including Warner Brothers, Universal, Fox, Sony and Disney.

The movie studios have always had a cozy relationship with Blockbuster, dating back to the 1990's when Blockbuster was the premiere movie rental location. Even as the company's fortunes have waned, the studios have remained close. Hollywood believes it is in their interest to keep Blockbuster around, where the average rental costs more than four times those from competitors like Redbox.

But how long can Blockbuster hang around? The movie studios have seen what happened when the music industry was caught unprepared for the digital revolution, but Disney seems one of the few willing to put its content where it's mouth is.

Ad Age: Why Disney Pictures Could Soon Look A Lot Like Procter & Gamble

She's also trying to bring a more agency-like approach to marketing at Disney, which will soon release the first slate of films from new studio Chairman Rich Ross, who joined last October from the Disney Channel. She has appointed "brand leads" for each of the studio's releases across its Disney, Touchstone Pictures, Pixar and DreamWorks divisions.

Disney Parks Press Conference Tomorrow

Disney Parks is holding a press conference in New York City tomorrow.

Don't get too excited, though. Pretty sure it's just to announce the new marketing campaign for 2011, "Let The Memories Begin."

But if you want to board the hype train anyway, they'll be live streaming it at 12:45 PM EDT on the Disney Parks Blog.

Imagineer John Mauro on the Disneyland Hotel Rebuild

"You have to understand that the Disneyland Hotel was built in bits and pieces over the past 50 years. Which is why - while this Resort has some great individual elements - it doesn't have great flow-thru. The Disneyland Hotel doesn't tell one cohesive story," Mauro explained. "That's why Imagineering is abandoning the piecemeal approach that we typically took when dealing with the Disneyland Hotel and are now facing all of these issues head on."
Back in the WestCOT days, the plan was to build The New Disneyland Hotel over by Harbor Blvd on the land now used as shuttle bus loading/unloading. When the Resort expansion plans were halved in the lead up to California Adventure, The New Disneyland Hotel was left on the drawing board.

When plans were being drawn up more recently for the current rebuild, one of the initial proposals was to level the existing Hotel and start from scratch.

I understand why they opted against it. Logistically, it wasn't feasible to keep portions of the old Hotel operating while trying to construct a new and very different hotel at the same time. But compare the Disneyland Hotel at Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland or Tokyo Disneyland to Anaheim's relic and you can see how razing the towers would allow the land to be transformed.

But the Disneyland Hotel has needed a major rethink for over twenty years. It's nice to see it finally being tackled at large. Hopefully once completed it will be worth staying there again.

And maybe the dreadful Paradise Pier Hotel will get similar treatment next.

Disney Parks - Big Revenue, Even Bigger Expenses

Walt Disney Company stock analysis by Trefis.
A Trefis cash-flow analysis finds that the parks and resorts segment contributes about 30% of Disney’s revenues but only 10% to its estimated stock value, making it the company’s fourth-most important division.

WDI Testing in California Adventure This Week

MousePlanet:
If you're in DCA this week and run across some people running around with props and costumes, I may know what they're doing. WDI is apparently testing a new interactive experience at DCA this week: it was described to me as a Kim Possible-type scavenger hunt, but themed to the California Gold Rush. You might spot them on the West side of the park. I have no idea what the final iteration of this test might be (or if they'll even develop it into anything).
There was a rumor this was going to be themed to Disney Channel's Phineas and Ferb series.

Trailer For Gnomeo and Juliet

At one point a Walt Disney Feature Animation production, a Mirimax production and finally a Touchstone production, Gnomeo and Juliet has spent the last six years in development hell.

Anyone remember Disney's short lived brush with outsourced animation five years ago? You can't tell me Valiant  and The Wild aren't in constant rotation in your Blu-ray player...

Thomas the Tank Engine For Sale? Disney's Not Interested This Time

In 2005, Disney and Apax Partners were in negotiations for Disney to purchase the rights to Thomas the Tank Engine. Disney walked away from those talks when the two parties couldn't agree on a price.

Now Deadline.com is reporting that Apax is hoping to offload Thomas early next year and is eyeing Disney as a possible buyer. They've even cut the asking price by more than $300 million.

But my understanding is that right now Disney's just not interested. As Deadline's report notes, Disney's invested in the upstart Chuggington series and many in the industry view Thomas the Tank Engine as a dying brand.

Never say never but don't expect Disney to do more then due diligence.

Disneyland AP 20% Merchandise Discount Extended Through Holidays

I hear Walt Disney World will be announcing something similar soon.

Current merchandise sell-through must be weak and if they're extending it through the holiday season Disney must not be expect it to improve anytime soon.

Every earnings call, you get executives saying they're going to start weening visitors off of discounts. But the discounts remain and, in some cases, deepen.

But you can't blame them.
